Let the recording begin!

I had three recording sessions this week. It’s always interesting being in the studio, but this album is different. It feels far more personal, and I’m recording the solo piano material “live” – no overdubs.

That makes it a challenge to get a good take, especially since much of these  performances is improvised. I’m working from a “conceptual” chart – there’s a few notes on the page, enough to serve as a reminder, but the details are all improvised.

I did have a few happy accidents….. AND had one take interrupted when  a flying insect started dancing on the chart. It was distracting, so I killed it. Joey, the producer, comes on the headphones and says, “WHAT was that?”. I was laughing so hard it took a minute to explain.

If you ever thought recording was “glamorous” – here’s what it looks like when I was recording:

At least I was comfortable!

More news later – 2 sessions this next week to finish up the solo piano material. The band come in the next week to start recording.
